‘Calçotada’ Festival At Lunya!

Lunya Bring ‘Calçotada’ To Manchester!

Lunya, Manchester’s truly authentic, independent Catalan restaurant, bar and deli, brought a true taste of Catalan culture to Manchester with their very own ‘Calçotada’ festival.

This is one of the most traditional of Catalan occasions, unique to this part of Spain. Lunya are the only brand in the Northwest who have observed the tradition every year for the last eight years and bring the extraordinary celebration to Manchester!

Calçotada is a celebration of the seasonal arrival of the unusual ‘Calcot’ – a Spanish vegetable, best described as a cross between a spring onion and a baby leek. At the Calçotada, the Calcots are traditionally charred over flames until soft and sweet on the inside, with a delightful smoky flavour. These are then served wrapped in newspaper, and eaten with the hands – picked up, peeled and dipped in Romesco sauce (almonds, roasted peppers, olive oil & sherry vinegar). It is all rather messy, and totally delicious!

The eating of the Calcots is followed by lots of chargrilled meats, and the celebration is topped off by the pouring the of cava served from a great height using a porron!

Since opening in Manchester in October 2015 Lunya have steadily built up a loyal following and have been constantly developing their amazing product range.

Independently owned, and family run, Lunya Manchester is now home to the one of the biggest Spanish delis in the country (and the biggest online deli in the UK with over 1300 products available), as well as the beautiful restaurant and their unique Spanish wine and gin bar.

The Calçotada event is a celebration of everything that Lunya is about, and featured ham carving, gin tastings, wine sampling, cheese masterclasses and more.

Totally devoted to sourcing the finest artisan produce and cuisine direct from Spain, the Lunya team are passionate about sharing the Spanish approach to eating and drinking – that is, great food enjoyed socially and democratically with no fuss.

Owners Peter (showing us how it’s done above) and Elaine visit Spain regularly, seeking out the very best suppliers, with whom they have established strong relationships – and they’re always developing new ones. Their explorations have uncovered exquisite products, which they buy direct from the farmers, fishermen and women, meat curers, cheese makers and a whole host of different artisan producers of fine food. It is these magnificent ingredients that make the Lunya restaurant experience so special…
